Artist Record Definitions
   
Name:   The name that is the standardized name, appellation, or other identifying phrase by which an artist (person or group) is identified in the Bunting Library collections.  e.g. Abeyta, Narciso or Howling Wolf or AmerINDIAN Architecture.
   
Variant Name:   Names, other than the standardized name, that are appellations or identifying phrases associated with the artist (person or group) who is the subject of the record.  Variant names might include recorded variations in spelling, transliterations, pseudonyms, native language names, nicknames, maiden names, married names, aliases, popular names, and abbreviated names.  e.g. Poveka for Maria Martinez or Jimmy Toddy for Beatien Yazz. 
   
Identifying Dates:   The span of time, designated in years, during which an individual lived or a group existed.  e.g. 1941-1967 for Jerome Tiger.
   
Gender:   The gender of the artist who is the subject of the record.  e.g. female for Rosalie Favell or male for Larry McNeil.
   
Nationality:   The assigned nationality of an artist (person or group) in the Bunting Library collections.  The assigned nationality might be derived from the individual’s place of birth, citizenship distinct from place of birth, ancestry distinct from citizenship, or common association with a country distinct from either ancestry or citizenship.  e.g. Canadian for Robert Houle.
   
Tribal Affiliations:   One or more cultural entities associated with the artist (person or group).  e.g.  Navajo (Diné) for Emmi Whitehorse or Nootka (Nuu-chah-nulth) for Patrick Amos.
   
Place of Birth:   The place where an individual was born or a group was established.  The place is listed hierarchically from the broadest down to the most specific known locus of birth.  e.g. (North & Central America, United States, New Mexico, Rio Arriba County, Santa Clara Pueblo) for Pablita Velarde.
   
Place of Death:   The place where an individual died or a group was dissolved.  The place is listed hierarchically from the broadest down to the most specific known locus of death.  e.g. (North & Central America, Canada, Manitoba, Island Lake, Garden Hill) for Jackson Beardy.
   
Life Roles:   One or more professional role played by the individual during his/her life or the roles that define the activities or mission of the group.  e.g.  Photographer for Jesse Cooday.
   
Relationships:   Familial, spousal or associative relationships of the artist who is the subject of the record to other artists who are represented in the Bunting Library collections.  e.g. Helen Hardin is the daughter of Pablita Velarde.
   
Information Sources:   Sources in which library staff found information for the artist (person or group) record.  This is not, nor is it intended to be, a complete bibliography of publications discussing the artist.
